All About Artificial Flowers - Caring & Information

What types of artificial flowers are available?

Silk/Fabric/Plastic/Foam/UV protected

We have many different artificial ranges in all of our stores which are all carefully made from different materials to ensure different finishes.

What are the benefits of artificial flowers?

We love so much about artificial flowers here at Whittingtons, that's why they are the heart of the business. From their reusability to being lightweight for transportation, and overall a very hassle-free approach to floral arrangements. One of our favorite things about artificial flowers is the fact they don’t need to be watered (no more dying flowers!). Artificial flowers are perfect for reusing around the household, arrangements, or even gifting. It's important to find the right artificial flowers for your requirements - consider the materials, whether it's able to be used in outdoor weather conditions and so forth.

Storing your artificial flowers

Before storing, make sure you have dusted your flowers down (click on blog here on how to clean your flowers), and when dry, store them in a tight sealed, but breathable container - such as a plastic box with a lid. Make sure you pop heavy blooms on the bottom, and lighter ones at the top to avoid any flowers getting squished. Layer the flowers in opposite directions; etc - where one flower head is, the stem is laid on top of the head.
Store out the way of sunlight, ideally with a blanket on top, or a room with blinds closed - this will help your flowers to avoid having faded colours when you next open the box.

Cutting your artificial flowers

Before cutting your fake flower, it really helps to bend the stem to the height you wish to have - this also helps that if you can place the flower in the arrangement with a bent stem rather than cut, you can reuse it at a later point with its full stem still.

If you desire on cutting it, it's best to do it with floristry heavy-duty wire cutters - you can find them in our stores for as little as £__.

Sometimes with larger stems, you can find it is slightly harder to cut through - in these cases it's good to bend the stem forward and backward multiple times to slightly weaken the stem.

Can I put my flowers outside?

Some of our artificial flowers in the store are designed to be put outside, they are called our ‘UV’ flowers. They have been created with a special coating on the top of the flower, in order to protect them from the sun without losing their colour and increase their lifespan for all weather conditions. You can also get a UV spray which can be used over usual artificial flowers to help keep them from fading too.

Note that not all types of artificial flowers can get wet; if you plan on spraying your artificial flowers make sure they are fabric or plastic, foam & ‘Real Touch’ ones can be damaged or disintegrate in water.
